In 1994, one of the biggest stories on the world stage was the Tonya Harding Nancy Kerrigan episode. You can’t make this stuff up…
Based on the true events between U.S. Figures skaters Tonya Harding and Nancy Kerrigan. Two young women who came from modest means competing against each other over the years. By the winter of 1993 they were both vying for a spot on the 1994 United States Olympic Figure skating team. While she was training near Boston, somebody attacked Kerrigan, injuring her leg. In the investigation of the attack the culprit ended up being a friend of Tonya’s estranged husband, Jeff. Kerrigan recovered and won a silver medal. As for Tonya, she had a terrible Olympics, hounded by investigators and a unrelenting media barrage, Harding skated poorly and was banned from skating for life. She has made a living by appearing on reality television shows.
Fun Facts: Allison Janney and screenwriter Steven Rogers have been lifelong friends, and he wrote the character of LaVona with her in mind. She was on set for only 8 days and walked away with an Oscar for Best Supporting actress.
