Youngblood

Director: Peter Markle (1986)

Cast: Rob Lowe, Cynthia Gibb, Patrick Swayze, Ed Lauter

We don’t get too many realistic looks at the sport of ice hockey in the cinema. This movie is no exception. What we do get from this movie are a lot of young actors who would go on to bigger and better roles and increments of stardom. Rob Lowe (West Wing), Cynthia Gibb (Fame) and Patrick Swayze (Dirty Dancing). That alone is a reason to check the movie out.

Rob Lowe plays Dean Youngblood, a 17-year-old Canadian Hockey player with player with a lot of talent for the game but needs to learn how to play with the big boys and the rest of the world. He joins a minor league team with a mixture of young players like himself and veteran players like Derek Sutton, played by Patrick Swayze, who has been around the for a while and takes Dean under his wing and since this a Rob Lowe vehicle, he must fall in love coach’s daughter played by Cynthia Gibb.

Fun Fact:

it’s probably one of one of first times we are introduced to a young Canadian actor named Keanu Reeves, who played hockey as a kid.
