Bend It Like Beckham

Director: Gurinda Chadha (2002)

Cast: Parminder Nagra, Kiera Nightley, Johnathan Rhys Meyers

The Little Movie that could. "Bend It Like Beckam' is a heartwarming charmer about a young girl's search for identity in 21st Century England. It was written and directed by the little-known female director Gurinda Chadha.  Jess and Jules are young girls from opposite sides of the tracks, who both want to play women's soccer over the objections of their families. Each girl sacrificed to keep playing the game they loved. Bend It Like Beckham' is a light-on-its-feet `feel-good' film that never takes itself too seriously.

This is one of those movies that may seem corny, but will stick with you long after viewing it.

Fun Fact:

When director Gurinder Chadha was planning to shoot her film, an enquiry went into David Beckham as to whether he'd appear. He was still in the midst of his football career at the time, but agreed to take part. The problem? That he and his wife – Victoria – couldn't make their schedules work.

With a minimal budget the film was a massive success in europe and the United Sates, especially on video.
