The Wrestler

Cast: Mickey Rourke, Marisa Tomei, Evan Rachel Wood

Director: Darren Aronofsky (2008)

The Wrestler was a fantastic comeback vehicle for actor Mickey Rourke. It is a realistic look into midwestern fascination of the show that is professional wrestling. This movie is well worth a look.

Rourke plays Randy “The Ram” Robinson, an aging professional wrestler who, despite poor health and flagging fame, continues to get into the ring in an effort to cling to his 1980s heyday. Along the way, he strikes up a relationship with a stripper at the club he frequents named Cassidy (Tomei), who encourages him to reach out to his estranged daughter, Stephanie (Wood).

Stephanie rejects Randy, who continues to chase the glory days on the independent wrestling circuit, and when a 20-year anniversary match is scheduled, he goes overboard in training; abusing steroids, he eventually suffers a heart attack and retires from the sport.

Stephanie eventually does let Randy back in her life, but Cassidy rebuffs his romantic advances, and despite her concern for his health, Randy gets into the ring one last time to dramatic effect.

Opinion/Review: A tad on the schmaltzy side, and definitely dark, the film stands out as a comeback vehicle for Mickey Rourke, who is outstanding. Tomei is her usual solid self, and Wood shines as well. Brace yourself for the final scene; it’s a tearjerker.

Fun Facts: Rourke was nominated for an Oscar and a Golden Globe for best male actor; he won the Golden Globe. Tomei was nominated for an Oscar as well. … “Rowdy” Roddy Piper, Brett “The Htman“ Hart, Vince McMahon and Mick Foley were among the professional wrestling luminaries to offer their approval of the film.
